A People’s Journey. A Nation’s History.

Join our racial justice pilgrimage to Washington, D.C. this August 9-11.

Register today!

This August, a group from LaSalle will travel by bus to our nation’s capital to engage in a weekend-long racial justice pilgrimage. This journey will be a great way to grow and connect with others at LaSalle as a part of our broader congregational focus on racial justice and equity.

Leaving in the early morning hours on Friday, August 9, our bus will be a ‘mobile discussion group’ as we watch and engage with documentaries and discussion relevant to our weekend’s focus. By sharing our own experiences on the bus, we will better frame the weekend’s experiences and connect with each other in the process. After arriving in DC and joining up with those flying, the key point of our trip will be visiting the newly-opened National Museum of African-American History and Culture (NMAAHC), the 19th Smithsonian Institution.

The NMAAHC is the only national museum dedicated to documenting African American life, history, and culture. With a robust collection of artifacts and exhibitions, the NMAAHC tells the full story of Black life in America, from the most troubling, sobering realities of white supremacy to celebrating the humanity, courage, and love expressed by generations of the oppressed. In the words of founding museum director Lonnie G. Bunch, "there are few things as powerful and as important as a people, as a nation that is steeped in its history.” Directly following, we’ll eat together and debrief as a group, sharing how our own life experiences with race impacted and informed the museum visit.

The capstone of our weekend comes on Sunday morning when we will worship together at Alfred Street Baptist Church. This will be a difficult, amazing, life-changing trip, made even more powerful by sharing it with those around you every Sunday. Prepare to confront uncomfortable truths. Prepare to re-evaluate you own relationship to race and America. Most of all, prepare to engage in this journey together as one church.

We will also be taking a sightseeing tour of DC including the Memorials & Embassy Row, and making a visit to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial. Beyond this, there will be time for you to venture out with other LaSallers or on your own to explore DC and its many, many museums and monuments.

This will be a fun and engaging experience for whole families, individuals, groups of friends — anyone! We’re so excited to see how this journey impacts and speaks to our congregation. If you have any questions, please contact Julie Welborn at jwelborn@lasallestreetchurch.org.
